About Tompot blenny fishing
The tompot blenny is a robust marine fish belonging to the combtooth blenny family, featuring an elongated brownish body marked with dark vertical bars and distinct branched tentacles above its large eyes. It reaches up to thirty centimetres in length and inhabits shallow coastal waters down to thirty-two metres deep, favouring rocky reefs, crevices, and boulder-strewn seabeds. As a non-migratory and intensely territorial demersal species, it feeds by grazing and scraping small invertebrates like crustaceans and sea anemones from hard substrates. Spawning occurs during spring when adhesive demersal eggs are laid and vigilantly guarded by the males. Though lacking commercial food value, it is widely recognised by marine naturalists and pursued by light tackle shore anglers.

When to fish for Tompot blenny
How to catch Tompot blenny
Tips for catching Tompot blenny
Targeting this territorial micro-species requires a light rock fishing approach focused tightly on rocky shorelines, harbour walls, and rough ground where individual fish occupy permanent crevices. Present small natural baits such as tiny pieces of worm, prawn, or crab on a fine-wire hook dropped vertically right against the structure. Because these fish are bold and inquisitive, they will readily venture from cover during daylight hours, especially as the tide settles or the sun dips towards dusk. Keep gear sensitive and be prepared for surprisingly aggressive takes and strong resistance relative to their size from fish defending their rocky homes.
