About Bluenose warehou fishing
The bluenose warehou is a robust, deep-water pelagic fish belonging to the family Centrolophidae. It features a fusiform body with dark blue to black upper flanks, a lighter underbelly, and large, luminous eyes adapted for low-light conditions. Growing up to 140 cm in total length and 63 kg, this species inhabits cold oceanic waters from 40 to 1,500 metres deep. Juveniles often associate with floating debris near the surface before migrating to deep rocky reefs, drop-offs, and continental slopes as adults. They feed primarily on pelagic tunicates, squid, crustaceans, and small fish, and spawn during the southern autumn and winter months.

How to catch Bluenose warehou
Tips for catching Bluenose warehou
Targeting this deep-water species requires specialized heavy gear, sturdy boat setups, and electric or heavy manual reels capable of reaching depths down to 600 metres along continental shelf drop-offs and rocky seamounts. Use a multi-hook paternoster rig baited with tough chunks of squid, mackerel, or pilchard to entice strikes in near-total darkness. Heavy metal jigs or slow-pitch jigs worked close to the seabed during daylight hours can also tempt bites when fish hold near underwater structure.
