Centerpin reel

Open drum

Large unhindered spool spins freely during long trotting drifts.

Rim

Exposed outer edge allows direct finger control and feathering of line.

Reel foot

Flat metal base secures the centerpin reel to the rod seat.

What is a centerpin reel used for?

A centerpin reel is a free-spool drum for trotting a float. There is almost no drag; the reel rotates with the current.

How is a centerpin reel different from similar gear?

Not a fly reel and not a spinning reel. The drum is wide and unprotected so it can spin for a long drift.

When should you use a centerpin reel?

Use it with a centerpin rod on rivers when the bait must travel at true current speed.

What problems does a centerpin reel solve?

It lets a float run a seam for tens of metres without the bail or drag of a spinning reel stalling the bait.
